Arthrosamid

What is Arthrosamid?

Athrosamid is a new type of treatment that can offer patients an effective, and non-invasive alternative to current treatments. It is a non-biodegradable hydrogel that is injected into the knee and cushions the joint to relieve the pain.

What can Arthrosamid treat?

This treatment is best used on patients with knee osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a long-term condition that worsens over time, causing pain and disability as those who suffer with it will know. It is where the cartilage in the knee joint that usually absorbs any force wears away causing the bones to rub together and become inflamed. As a result, this means the joint becomes stiff, swollen and painful.

Typically the only method to treat this would have been total knee replacement – however this should be a last resort and can now be prolonged with Arthrosamid.

How does it work?

Athrosamid is a minimally invasive out-patient procedure. It is performed under local anaesthetic with ultrasound guidance.

Firstly, the patient will be given the local anaethetic to numb the injection site. The same needle is set in place for the whole procedure.

If there is any fluid in the joint that will be removed before the Athrosamid is injected. An ultrasound will allow the clinician to find the perfect spot for it to be injected into.

Next the Athrosamid gel will be inserted and injected through the same site and repeated until 6ml is delivered. Finally, the needle will be removed, and a plaster will be placed over the injection site. You will be able to immediately weight bear on the treated limb.

Athrosamid Ambassador

Athrosamid have a brand-new ambassador, Sharron Davies MBE. For those that do not know she is an ex-Olympic swimmer, world renowned broadcaster and former gladiator. Over the years, she as sustained injuries which were not helped by her intense training. Gradually the knee became stiffer over time, and while filming she snapped her ACL and discovered she had grade four arthritis. She received one treatment and couldn’t believe the effects and how quick the procedure was.
